Biodiversity: Flora & fauna
At our resort you can enjoy beautiful flora and fauna. The built-up part of our resort covers only a portion of the total area. The gardens are planted with native plant species where local animals like to stay. Wonderful for you to enjoy and good for the local ecosystem. Iguanas are not yet considered an endangered species, however, they are decreasing in number at an alarming rate. Plaza Beach & Dive Resort allows iguanas to roam freely in the park. We actively try to prevent our guests from feeding the animals to maintain the balance of the ecosystem.
Lionfish
Since the arrival of the Lionfish in the Caribbean waters, many fish in their natural environment are threatened. Despite its beautiful looks, the fish poses a threat to the reef of Bonaire. Stinapa (Bonaire National Parks Foundation) keeps the fish population in check by hunting Lionfish during dive trips. The dive instructors of Toucan Diving help Stinapa by hunting Lionfish during their dive trips.
Muggen
The island has many mosquitoes, including the tiger mosquito, which sometimes carries unpleasant diseases. To minimize the nuisance of mosquitoes for you as a guest, they are controlled every two weeks. The walkways outside the rooms are treated with a so-called 'Fogger Machine'. In a few minutes, the active mosquitoes are effectively controlled using a biological pesticide.
