Visit the Donkey Sanctuary, Bonaire's donkey refuge
Whoever gets to know Bonaire will quickly discover the special bond between the island and the donkey. These animals have been part of the streetscape since the 17th century, after the Spaniards brought them to Bonaire as indispensable pack animals. They transported goods over rough paths and worked in the salt pans. With the advent of modern vehicles, that role disappeared. Today, donkeys are an important part of Bonaire's living heritage. At the Donkey Sanctuary, you can meet them up close and learn their story in a safe and protected environment.
How many donkeys live on Bonaire?
The number of donkeys on Bonaire has grown significantly in recent years. Currently, an estimated 1,100 donkeys live in the wild. In addition, the Donkey Sanctuary provides a safe and well-cared home for more than 800 donkeys. Together, the island thus has over 1,900 donkeys. Because the animals in Bonaire have no natural enemies, the sanctuary ensures that a significant portion of the population can enjoy peace and safety.
