The donkey sanctuary of Bonaire
Visit the Donkey Sanctuary
Whoever gets to know Bonaire quickly discovers the special bond between the island and the donkeys. Since the 17th century, these animals have been part of the streetscape, after the Spaniards brought them to Bonaire as indispensable pack animals. They transported goods over rugged paths and worked in the salt pans. With the arrival of modern vehicles, that role disappeared. Today, donkeys are an important part of Bonaire's living heritage. In the Donkey Sanctuary, you meet them up close and learn their story in a safe and protected environment.
How many donkeys live on Bonaire?
The number of donkeys on Bonaire has grown significantly in recent years. It is currently estimated that there are over 1,100 donkeys living in the wild. Additionally, the Donkey Sanctuary provides a safe and well-cared-for home to more than 800 donkeys. Together, the island has over 1,900 donkeys. Because the animals on Bonaire have no natural enemies, the sanctuary ensures that a significant portion of the population can enjoy peace and safety.
A donkey safari in all comfort
The Donkey Sanctuary is an extensive nature park that is set up to be explored by car. With a rental car it is therefore most comfortable to visit the sanctuary. It not only provides you with protection from the bright sun, but also allows you to drive through the reserve at your own pace. During the route, you will notice how curious the donkeys are; they often come right up to the window to greet you. At the entrance, carrots and bales of hay are available, which is a fun way to make direct contact with the animals. It also provides unique photo opportunities from the comfort of your car. Although it is also possible to get out and walk among the donkeys.
The 'Mommy Meadow' and specialized care
In the so-called 'Mommy Meadow,' mothers stay with their newborn foals. Donkeys that need extra medical attention or special care are also looked after here in peace. It is an impressive place where the dedication of the team of volunteers is immediately visible. In the surrounding garden, you can also meet other local residents, such as tortoises, iguanas, and flamingos.
