6 facts about the mangroves of Lac Bay on Bonaire

Lac Bay is one of the most unique natural areas of Bonaire. The landscape differs greatly from what you see elsewhere on the island and plays an important role in the marine ecosystem. This list helps you better understand Lac Bay, know what you can do here, and how to best plan your visit.

1. Lac Bay is the largest lagoon area of the ABC islands

Lac Bay is located on the east coast of Bonaire and covers more than 700 hectares. It is the largest lagoon of the ABC islands. The area is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park and has been on the Ramsar list of internationally protected wetlands since 1980.

The combination of shallow water, seagrass beds, and mangroves makes Lac Bay an essential habitat for young marine life. Many fish species that later live at the reef begin their life cycle here.

2. Mangroves form a natural protection system here

Three types of mangroves grow in Lac Bay: red, black, and white mangroves. Each type has its own way of dealing with saltwater and contributes to the stability of the area.

The root structures retain sediment, dampen waves, and provide shelter. As a result, the water remains relatively clear and creates a safe environment where plants and animals can develop. Without mangroves, the lagoon would be much more vulnerable to erosion and disturbance.

3. The mangroves are not a walking area

Most of the mangrove area is not freely accessible. Walking through the mangroves is not allowed because the roots, soil, and animals are very sensitive to disturbance.

This rule is not to restrict but to protect. By following fixed routes with a guide, nature remains undisturbed, and everyone can continue to enjoy this special area.

4. Visits to the mangroves always take place under guidance

Those who want to experience the mangroves up close do so via a guided activity. The most chosen form is a kayak tour, often combined with a short snorkeling session. During such a tour, you sail through narrow channels and along mangrove roots, with explanations from a guide about what you see.

The routes are clearly and calmly set up. The guidance ensures that visitors comply with the rules and do not damage the area while you enjoy the tranquility of the mangrove.

5. Snorkeling in the mangroves requires a different perspective

Snorkeling in Lac Bay looks different from along the west coast of Bonaire. You snorkel in shallow water among mangrove roots and seagrass, where mainly young marine life can be seen. Think of small fish and crustaceans seeking shelter here. It's less about distance or depth and more about quietly observing what happens close to the roots.

Tip: Do not touch the bottom with your feet, as the sand will stir up and the water will become less clear.

6. Lac Bay can also be experienced from the shore

You don't necessarily have to go on the water to visit Lac Bay. Around Sorobon on the south side and Cai on the north side, you already get a good view of the lagoon, the open water, and the mangrove edges.

For those with little time or who prefer to stay on land, this is an accessible way to view the area. Here, you can also see many flamingos and pelicans. And for the keen observer, occasionally a turtle surfaces to catch a breath.

How long does a visit to Lac Bay last?

Lac Bay is located on the east coast of Bonaire and is easily accessible from Plaza Resort Bonaire. The guided mangrove tour usually lasts 2 to 3 hours. This makes it easy to plan a visit as part of a half-day, with room to combine it with other activities in the south or east of the island.
