History of the slave huts

Europeans first settled on Bonaire in 1499, but it wasn't until 1636 that Dutch colonists began building slave huts all over the island. These small houses, made of stone or masonry, served as accommodation for the slaves working on the island's plantations. In some cases, up to seven slaves shared one house, each with their own sleeping area and storage space for their belongings. Although many of these buildings have been destroyed over time, there are still about 30 remaining today.
