HIKING IN WASHINGTON SLAGBAAI

DISCOVER

In the northwest of Bonaire lies Washington Slagbaai National Park: rugged cliffs, deserted bays, salt lakes full of flamingos and a landscape of giant cacti as far as you can see. You hike routes of one to four hours, independently with a park map or accompanied by a local guide. Note: the park closes early and the last entry is around 14:30, so leave in the morning.

WHAT TO EXPECT

THE DAY STEP BY STEP

You plan a day at Washington Slagbaai around the opening hours. In broad strokes it looks like this.

Leaving early for the northwest

THE DRIVE

From the resort it is about a one hour drive to the park entrance, partly over unpaved roads. Leave early: that way you have the coolest hours for the hike and comfortably make the last entry at 14:30.

Choosing from routes of 1 to 4 hours

THE HIKE

At the entrance you receive a map with the routes. Short hikes lead along the coast and the salt lakes with flamingos, longer routes head into the dry interior, between the cacti and over rocky paths. There are no facilities along the way, so bring everything you need yourself.

Out of the park before closing time

THE RETURN

The park closes around 17:00. Plan your hike so you are back at the exit in time, and allow for the one hour drive back.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What time do I need to be there?

The park opens around 08:00 and the last entry is around 14:30. This is the most common visitor mistake: anyone arriving after 14:30 will not be admitted.

Can I enter the park with a regular rental car?

A 4x4 is strongly recommended. The roads in the park are unpaved and rough in places.

Is the hike suitable for children?

Yes, on the shorter routes. The longer routes are hot, rocky and without shade, making them suitable only for fit hikers.

How demanding are the routes?

From light (1 hour, flat) to tough (4 hours, rocky and hot). Good fitness is needed for the longer routes. With heart, mobility or health issues we advise against the demanding routes.

Can I go with a guide?

Yes, Shekhinah Tours offers a guided park tour from $179.20, including transport. Nice and comfortable if you would rather leave the drive and navigation to someone else.

Can I swim or snorkel in the park?

Yes, at several bays along the route. The Nature Fee included in the entrance covers water use.
