To truly learn about Bonaire, it's a good idea to head towards Rincon. As soon as you enter the oldest village on the island, the atmosphere changes immediately. The pace is slower, the colorful houses tell stories of the past, and between the hills Bonaire suddenly feels even more authentic.
In the middle of Rincon, you will find Cadushy Distillery, the only distillery in Bonaire. Not a large factory, but a place where craftsmanship, local traditions, and the flavors of the island come together. As soon as you step inside, you smell the herbs, see the copper kettles and immediately notice that work is done here with love.
During a visit, you will especially discover the story behind Bonaire itself.
From cactus to liqueur
On the island, you will see the kadushi cactus everywhere along the road. For many visitors, it simply belongs to the landscape, but at Cadushy Distillery, this cactus suddenly gets a new meaning.
The natural sugars from the kadushi form the basis for various drinks that are produced here. During the tour, you will hear how the cactus is processed, fermented, and eventually transformed into a surprisingly smooth liqueur, which you may taste yourself.
A distillery full of island character
What once started with one cactus liqueur has grown into an extensive collection of spirits, each carrying a piece of Bonaire within them.
Everything is produced in small batches, with attention to quality and local ingredients. That small-scale character is what makes a visit to Cadushy Distillery so special. Here, it’s not about mass production, but about passion and stories.
Additionally, the distillery also produces rum, gin, vodka, and whiskey. Especially the Rom Rincon has gained international recognition for its spicy, warm taste.
Behind many of these creations stands Eric Gietman, who with "The Spirit of Bonaire" literally tries to capture the character of the island in every bottle.
The charm of Rincon
A visit to Cadushy Distillery is ultimately about more than just the drinks. It's especially the combination with Rincon that makes this experience so special.
Rincon feels different from the rest of Bonaire. Quieter, more traditional, and strongly connected to the local culture. Here you get a glimpse of the Bonaire of the past.
Practical tip for your visit
Cadushy Distillery is located about a 15-minute drive from Kralendijk and is easily accessible by car or scooter. The distillery is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
