Donkey Sanctuary

Do you love donkeys? Then Donkey Sanctuary is the place to be! The park protects and cares for hundreds of cute donkeys on Bonaire. You can ride around the park and feed the animals. Also, if you want to support the park, you can adopt a donkey! A visit to the sanctuary is highly recommended when you are on Bonaire.

History of the Donkey Sanctuary

Donkeys have been part of Bonairean culture since 1636, when they were brought over by Spanish settlers. For centuries, they were used as working and pack animals, helping farmers transport their goods around the island. Unfortunately, their numbers dwindled over time due to neglect and abuse. In 1993, Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire was established to take in sick, injured and orphaned donkeys. Today, this sanctuary houses more than 700 donkeys!

What to do at the Donkey Sanctuary

The sanctuary offers you many ways to interact with and learn about donkeys. Tours are given where you, the visitor, can see the donkeys up close. During these tours, you will learn more about the history and how donkeys play an important role in conserving biodiversity in tropical areas like Bonaire. You can even drive your car through the park and help feed the donkeys during your visit! If you're looking for a unique souvenir, be sure to take a look in the gift shop as well, all proceeds of which benefit the donkeys. More information about Donkey Sanctuary can be found here.
