7 tips for a visit to Washington Slagbaai National Park
Washington Slagbaai National Park
Washington Slagbaai National Park is one of the most impressive natural areas on Bonaire. The park covers a large part of the northwest of the island and consists of rugged hills, salt lakes, sand roads, and secluded bays. You explore the park by car, make stops along the way at viewpoints, and can walk or swim at various locations.
To get the most out of your visit, a little preparation is helpful. With these eight tips, you'll know what you definitely want to do, which places are worthwhile, and what practical considerations to keep in mind.
1. Take the long route for the complete picture
For the first time in the Washington Slagbaai park? Then go for the long route. During this route, you pass by most highlights of the park and get a good impression of the landscape. You drive along salt lakes, viewpoints and various coastlines. Without stops, the route already takes several hours, but it is precisely the opportunity to stop along the way that makes this route so attractive.
The short route is suitable when you have less time. You miss some characteristic spots, but you can still climb the Brandaris.
2. Go swimming at Wayaka II or Boka Slagbaai
For those who want to cool down during the car route, the best option is at Wayaka II or Boka Slagbaai. These bays often have calm and clear water and are suitable for swimming or snorkeling. The beach is simple and natural, without facilities.
Bring your own swimwear, towel, and snorkeling gear. Water shoes also come in handy!
3. Take a nice walk
You explore Washington Slagbaai primarily by car. The hiking trails are located along the car route and are easy to combine. You park your car at the start of a trail, take the walk, and then continue your route through the park.
There are three marked hiking trails:
Lagadishi Trail A short, flat walk of about 45 to 60 minutes along the coast and salt flats. Suitable for those who want an accessible walk without significant elevation changes.
Kasikunda Trail A short walk of about 30 minutes with a clear climb to a viewpoint. This route is suitable if you want to make an active stop along the way.
Brandaris TrailAn intensive walk of about 1.5 to 2 hours to the highest point of Bonaire. This trail requires good fitness and is only recommended in the morning, with plenty of water and sturdy shoes.
4. Also stop at unnamed viewpoints and coastlines
Not all interesting spots in Washington Slagbaai are marked with a sign. Along the route, you will regularly find viewpoints and stretches of coast where you can safely stop. These places give a good impression of the landscape and are suitable for stepping out or taking photos.
5. Depart on time and take access times into account
The park is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 08:00 and 17:00. The last entry is at 14:30. Because the route and stops together take a lot of time, it is advisable to leave in the morning. This prevents you from having to make choices due to lack of time.
6. Go well prepared
There are no shops or restaurants in Washington Slagbaai. Therefore, bring at least two liters of water per person, supplemented with lunch or substantial snacks. Due to the open location, protection against the sun is important, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a cap or hat.
Did you have lunch in the park? Make sure you take all the waste back with you. This way we ensure together that we keep the park clean.
7. Choose a suitable rental car for the terrain
The roads in the park are unpaved. An SUV or pick-up is mandatory. With a low or small car, you may be refused at the entrance. Check the tire pressure before departure and ensure you have enough fuel, as refueling in the park is not possible.
